MARTIN, Tenn. – After spending four seasons at the helm of the University of Tennessee at Martin cross country and track and field programs, head coach Peter Dalton has announced his resignation to assume another coaching position.
During his time at UT Martin, Dalton has taken the program to unprecedented success. Not only have his squads rewritten the majority of the program's record books, he has coached a pair of All-Americans and Ohio Valley Conference champions while leading both programs to regional success.
"I want to thank UT Martin for all of the support over the years as we have taken our program to new heights," Dalton said. "When I look back on where this program was and how it has grown over the last four years, it is remarkable. We have seen our program be put on the map at both the conference and regional level. I'm so appreciate of our student-athletes and my staff which have built the foundation for a great future."
Dalton took over a program which consistently ranked towards the bottom of the OVC in cross country and implemented a winning culture. With consistent improvements from year-to-year, the Skyhawk cross country programs have become a threat at the regional level while finishing amongst the top half of conference competitors. Then in 2017, Dalton led the resurgence of a reintroduced track and field program after a nearly 15-year hiatus while simultaneously rewriting the school record books and boasting numerous All-OVC honors.
"On the behalf of UT Martin, I want to thank Peter for his service to our student-athletes and our community," UT Martin Director of Athletics Kurt McGuffin said. "Peter has developed a winning culture while providing our student-athletes the support to be their best competitively, academically and socially. We look forward to bringing in a replacement that can build upon his success."
A national search will begin immediately for the next UT Martin cross country and track and field coach.
