NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin competes for a conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth on Sunday, April 28 when the Skyhawks take on Austin Peay in the Ohio Valley Conference finals. Admission is free as the match takes place at Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville at 10 a.m.
          Â
The Skyhawks, who have previously won OVC championships in 1994, 1995, 2005, 2006, 2011 and 2016, will be in search of their first OVC Tournament championship since the conference switched to a bracket format in 2006. UT Martin (7-11) is the first-ever No. 6 seed to reach the OVC championship match.
          Â
Head coach Dennis Taylor and the Skyhawks earned their way into the championship showdown with several clutch performances down the stretch. After clinching a spot in the tournament field on the final day of the regular season, UT Martin has knocked off No. 3 seed Murray State (4-3 in the quarterfinal round) and No. 2 seed Jacksonville State (4-3 in the semifinal round) in a two-day span.
          Â
The Skyhawks have received incredible balance so far in the OVC Championship tournament, as all six active players have won at least one decision in both matches. That includes All-OVC first teamer Asel Jumamukhambetova, who is a combined 4-0 at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles alongside Jemima Potter.
          Â
UT Martin's No. 2 doubles tandem of Daphne Pratt and Mizuki Sakurai also boast a perfect 2-0 record in the OVC championship event. In singles, Amelia Campbell and Andrea Plantada are 2-0 in the postseason at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
          Â
These two squads met back on April 6 in Clarksville, as the Governors came away with a 6-1 win. In that match, the Skyhawks' No. 3 doubles team of Campbell and Plantada claimed a 6-4 triumph while Jumamukhambetova scored a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. That win was the first instance in four OVC matches that Austin Peay had conceded a singles point.
          Â
The Governors (21-0) are the only unbeaten squad in the NCAA Division-I women's tennis ranks, as they won their first OVC regular season championship since 1989 before defeating Southeast Missouri (4-0) in the OVC semifinals on Saturday.
Â
Austin Peay landed five players on the 2019 All-OVC team, led by first teamers Claudia Yanes Garcia (39-10 combined record in 2018-19) and Lidia Yanes Garcia (46-10). Tatiana Lopez (39-9), Fabienne Schmidt (32-8) and Helena Kuppig (28-7) also chalked up All-OVC second team accolades while Ross Brown was named OVC Coach of the Year.
