BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference unveiled its post-winter championships update of its 2018-19 Commissioner's Cup standings today, as the University of Tennessee at Martin is currently in seventh place out of 12 universities.
Murray State's 84 points top the field while Belmont (71.5), Eastern Kentucky (68.5), Morehead State (62) and Southeast Missouri (61.75) and Eastern Illinois (59.75) round out the top six. The Skyhawks have accrued 57 points and are followed by Austin Peay (52.5), Jacksonville State (52.5), Tennessee Tech (49), SIUE (42.25) and Tennessee State (37.5).
UT Martin ranked fourth in the standings in the first update on Dec. 7, which came after the fall championship season. The Skyhawk soccer team leads the way with 12 points while women's basketball (10.5), women's cross country (7), men's cross country (7), volleyball (5.5), football (5), men's basketball (4.5), rifle (3), men's indoor track (1.5) and women's indoor track (1) have also contributed to UT Martin's point total.
The Skyhawks' best finish in the history of the OVC Commissioner Cup standings was a seventh-place effort in 2011-12. UT Martin's school record for most points in a single academic year is 89 points, which came in 2016-17.
Introduced in 2008-09, the OVC Commissioner's Cup is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in Conference-sponsored championships and is awarded annually to one member institution. Schools are required to count point totals for four main sports (football, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball) along with their next eight highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender.
For all sports (except rifle, men's indoor and men's outdoor track – which do not have eight participating teams), the first-place team earns 12 points, the second-place team earns 11 points, etc. For rifle, men's indoor and men's outdoor track and field, the first-place team earns 12 points and each subsequent place earns points less than the total number of teams in the OVC divided by the number of teams that sponsor that sport.
