WACO, Texas – The No. 10 ranked University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian program moved up in two of the four lists on the National Collegiate Equestrian Association's third set of event rankings, which were released this afternoon.
Event rankings are determined at each head-to-head competition based on a variety of data points (win/loss, home/away, current rank of opponent, etc.). The event rankings may differ from the NCEA team rankings that are released every week throughout the season, as they are based solely on the results from the single event in a head-to-head meet.
The Skyhawks made their largest leap in reining, as they are now ranked No. 6 nationally in that event. That came after UT Martin was ranked seventh in the Feb. 20 rankings and 10th in the initial rankings on Nov. 21.
The Skyhawks also jumped up one spot in horsemanship by moving up to No. 8. UT Martin was ranked ninth in both the Feb. 20 and Nov. 21 sets of rankings.
In equitation on the flat, the Skyhawks are now ranked No. 8. UT Martin was previously slotted at No. 7 on Feb. 20 and No. 8 on Nov. 21.
The Skyhawks were also represented in equitation over fences, as they were slotted 12th in the field. UT Martin was originally ranked No. 12 in the event before moving up to No. 10 as part of the February rankings.
The national championship format includes four event titles that will be included in the April 2019 NCEA National Championship. The event titles will be determined through a head-to-head bracket format in each of the four events that comprise a head-to-head in-season meet. The event rankings are determined by the NCEA Selection Committee and are released to the National Championship. The final set of rankings on April 1 will be used to seed teams for the event title competitions in Waco, Texas on April 17-20.
