MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field squad kicked off the start of outdoor track by competing at the Margaret Simmons Invite in Murray, Ky. on Friday.
Despite cold weather conditions, both men and women showed promising signs of the rest of the season to come. As a whole, the Skyhawks would record three event victories in the meet.
In the women's 1500m, freshman Alexis Grandys garnered an easy victory by over a six second margin with an impressive sub-five minute effort while the Skyhawks tallied four of the top six times in the event.
On the sprint side, junior Jasmyn Pilcher took fourth place in the 100m dash against a competitive Murray State team. Meanwhile, in the 400m hurdles, freshman Anndrea Chester took second place overall.
On the men's side, senior Jonathon Conley eased his way into a win in the 800m for the Skyhawks second individual title of the meet. Meanwhile the third Skyhawk came in the men's 4x800 with Austin Knight, Jhon-Wes Walker, Leonel Perez and Timothy Dye earning medalist honors. Wrapping up the top performances was the duo of Alex Schell and Lenny Baumann which posted new PRs while taking second and third, respectively.
"This was a small meet which allowed our athletes to get their feet under their legs for the first time since OVC," UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton said.
UT Martin will return to action to action on Saturday, March 30 at the Ole Miss Classic.
