
UT MARTIN TENNIS PRODUCES SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS BUT FALLS 7-0 AT NO. 29 TENNESSEE

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad traveled across the state to take on sister school Tennessee, battling throughout before falling 7-0 to the No. 29 ranked Lady Vols at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The Skyhawks nearly claimed a doubles win against nationally ranked Tennessee, as the No. 2 duo of Mizuki Sakurai and Daphne Pratt were tied at 3-all before the Lady Vols clinched the opening point. Jemima Potter and Asel Jumamukhambetova fell 6-1 to the No. 9 ranked Tennessee tandem while Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell suffered a 6-0 setback at No. 3.

Sakurai and Jule Streif came out strong in singles play at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. The sophomore duo each forced tiebreakers in their opening set but were defeated by identical 7-6 (3), 6-1 margins.

At No. 2, Potter nearly pushed her matchup to a third set but fell 6-0, 7-5. Jumamukhambetova also gained momentum in her second set but she was defeated by a 6-0, 6-4 margin at No. 1. Pratt and Plantada each stayed within striking distance but fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

UT Martin faces a quick turnaround as it wraps up a brief road swing at Chattanooga on Monday, Feb. 25. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
