CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Early momentum was not quite enough for the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team, as the Skyhawks were defeated by a 5-2 margin at in-state rival Chattanooga this afternoon.
          Â
UT Martin came out strong, earning the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell teamed up for a 6-4 victory at No. 3 while the tandem of Mizuki Sakurai and Daphne Pratt accounted for a 7-5 win at No. 2.
          Â
In singles action, Asel Jumamukhambetova earned a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4) victory at No. 1. However, that would be the only singles victory that the Skyhawks would generate.
          Â
Jule Streif nearly came away with a win at No. 6 before falling 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Sakurai competed throughout but was defeated 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. Pratt (lost 6-3, 6-4) represented UT Martin at No. 3 while Plantada fell at No. 4 by a 6-2, 6-4 score. At No. 2, Jemima Potter battled but was defeated by a 6-3, 6-2 margin.
          Â
The Skyhawks have six days off before their next competition, as UT Martin travels to the Peach State to take on Georgia State (March 3) and Valdosta State (March 5).
