BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field teams continued to show league opponents the growth and development of the program at the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track Championships this week held at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama with four event titles and numerous scoring performances.
Highlighting the championship performance were titles in the men's distance relay, men's 60m, men's 60h and men's 200m dash.
In the men's DMR, the quartet of Tyreke Sapp, Oisin O'Gailin, Leonel Perez and Jonathan Conley not only won the event title, but posted the fourth fastest time in OVC history with a mark of 10:01.48. The time shattered the program's previous record by over 21 seconds.
After a record-setting performance in the DMR, Sapp continued to set the CrossPlex on fire with his record-setting performances. In the 60m dash, Sapp broke his program record for the third-straight week with a time of 6.85 seconds. He then came back in the 200m with another show-stopping and dominating performance at 21.20 seconds – besting his previous mark by nearly two-tenths of a second to win his third total title and second individual honor.
Another freshman burst onto the scene in the men's 60m hurdles as Brady Fry posted an event victory by the closest of margins. His time of 8.21 seconds set a new program record while narrowly edging his competitor by 0.001 seconds.
Junior Ryan Ford also posted a big championship performance, scoring in both the 3k and 5k against some of the league's most competitive athletes. With the OVC's strength behind held in the mid and long distances, Ford and O'Gailin (mile run) did more than hold their own. Ford began his championship by scoring with a fifth-place finish in the 3k at 8:27.03 while posting a fourth-place time in the 5k at 14:48.93. Meanwhile, O'Gailin returned from his DMR victory to score with a fourth-place finish in the mile run at 4:14.88.
UT Martin also posted numerous scoring performances to total 61 points on the men's side. In the men's 60m dash, Kewan Slaton ranked as a scorer with an eighth place finish at 7.17 second. Then the Skyhawks placed a pair of scorers in the men's 800m run as Jhon-Wes Walker finished sixth at 1:56.62 and Conley ranked eighth at 2:01.8.
Freshman Breanna Alderton wrapped up her debut indoor season by scoring for the Skyhawks in the mile run with a time of 5:04.25. Joining in the fun on the women's side, junior Jasmyn Pilcher posted a PR in the 200m dash with a time of 26.08. Joining in the action was Chandler Robinson with a PR time of 26.75 in the event.
"Today was a great day for our program," UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton said. "Everyone competed really well. The men tripled their point total from a year ago. Today was a phenomenal result and is a huge spring board as we go to the outdoor season."
UT Martin will open the outdoor portion of the track and field scheduled on Friday, March 15 with the team's appearance at the Margret Simmons Invite in Murray, Ky.
