WACO, Texas – Savannah Metheny, a junior at the University of Tennessee at Martin, has been selected as the National Collegiate Equestrian Association Signature Academics Standout Athlete of the Month, the organization announced today.
The award is focused towards accomplishments in and out of the arena, including community service, academic accomplishment, outstanding attitude and being an overall ideal teammate.
"Savannah is a tremendous student-athlete," Skyhawk head coach Meghan Corvin said. "She has such a positive attitude about the team, academics and life. She participates in many campus activities and is heavily involved in several research projects on campus. She is extremely driven and will succeed in whatever she does."
A Weston, W.Va. native, Metheny has taken part in seven official meets in her UT Martin career while also representing the Skyhawks in numerous exhibitions. She earned a pair of victories in equitation over fences during her freshman campaign, including a career-best 79 points at No. 3 Georgia on Oct. 22, 2016.
Metheny is very active in community service, contributing nearly 200 hours of volunteer work since becoming a collegiate student-athlete. Canned food drives, Letters in Motion, Wounded Warrior fly fishing projects, Special Olympics, Santa's Village, the HART Animal Center and the Jaeckle Centre are among the many ventures that she has worked with since the fall of 2016.
Academically, Metheny majors in pre-veterinary medicine and has earned the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll award in each of her first two seasons as a Skyhawk in addition to the Cunningham Outstanding Freshman award. She has been heavily involved in a pair of undergraduate research projects at UT Martin, assisting the Department of Chemistry and Physics in the synthesis of silicone microspheres using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and also working with the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences and Natural Resources in the effects of cold laser therapy on exuberant granulation tissue in an equine athlete.
Since the fall of 2017, Metheny has served as the UT Martin Equestrian Activities Committee Chair, organizing team events to promote the growth of individual team members, team cohesiveness, positive attitude and team work ethic through team bonding activities. In that role, she strives to encourage others through acts of positivity and perseverance in and out of the arena to create the best environment possible for team success in both academics and athletics.
