BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin track and field standout Tyreke Sapp has been recognized for his record-setting performances by being named Ohio Valley Conference Male Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. This is the first OVC Indoor Athlete of the Week honor for a member of the track and field team since the program's reintroduction in 2017.
A native of Cypress, Texas, Sapp has burst onto the scene in his redshirt-freshman campaign for the Skyhawks. Not only has he rewritten portions of the Skyhawk record book, but he has notched some of the best times in the OVC this season. With the weekly honor Sapp joins an elite list of OVC Athletes of the Week at UT Martin, joining Jonathan Conley (2017 Outdoor Athlete of the Week) and Anne Asipan (2017 Outdoor Athlete of the Week).
After notching a pair of school records two weeks ago at the Don DeNoon Invitational, he wasted little time besting those marks last week at the Hoosier Hills Invite. In the 200m dash, he not only finished first in the event to claim an individual title but posted the fastest time in the OVC this season with a mark of 21.38 seconds. He also broke a school record in the 60m dash with a time of 6.88 seconds, ranking as the second-fastest time in the league this year.
Sapp will put his training to the test in a quest for some OVC hardware when the Skyhawks return to action at the OVC Indoor Track Championship held in Birmingham, Ala. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 through Thursday, Feb. 21.
