2/1/2019 9:24:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball will close out its trip through Music City with a headline matchup against Ohio Valley Conference rival Belmont on Saturday, Feb. 2. Tipoff from the Curb Event Center is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The matchup will pit two of the league's perennial championship contenders in UT Martin and Belmont against each other. The Skyhawks won four OVC regular season titles and four OVC tournament titles over the course of five seasons while the Bruins finally broke through with back-to-back undefeated seasons, two OVC Championships and three straight NCAA Tournament berths since 2015-16. Dating back to the 2011-12 season, UT Martin (99-24, 80.4 percent) and Belmont (86-21, 80.3 percent) have combined to post a 185-45 (80.4 percent) overall record against conference foes. The two programs have also combined to tab six OVC regular season titles and seven of the last eight NCAA Tournament berths.
The Skyhawks enter the contest with a 15-5 overall mark while possessing a 7-2 record in OVC play. In the team's most recent contest, UT Martin saw Emanye Robertson and Maddie Waldrop combine to score 40 points as the squad posted a 73-61 road victory at Tennessee State on Thursday night. Overall, the Skyhawks have won seven of their last eight contests and enters Saturday's contest one-game out of first place in the league standings behind Belmont.
Belmont (15-5, 8-1 OVC) saw its unbeaten streak in OVC play reach its peak of 47 games dating back to the 2015-16 season before ultimately watching it snap against Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Jan. 5. Despite the early bump in the road, the Bruins have won seven straight to return to the head of the OVC standings. The Bruins are led offensively by the play of senior guard Darby Maggard (15.4 ppg, 4.5 apg) and junior forward Ellie Harmeyer (15.3 ppg, 9.0 rpg).
Saturday's matchup marks the 34th meeting between the two programs in series history. Belmont holds a 22-11 series advantage, including four straight matchups. UT Martin last won in the Curb Event Center on Jan. 3, 2015. Despite the lopsided results, the Skyhawks have seven of 13 matchups under head coach Kevin McMillan.
