MARTIN, Tenn. – More than halfway through a challenging eight-game road swing is the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team, who travels north to take on Central Michigan out of the Mid-American Conference. Tipoff on Friday, Dec. 6 is set for 6 p.m. CST.
This marks the second trip to Mount Pleasant in less than four years for the Skyhawks, who dialed up a 76-73 win over the Chippewas in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament in 2016.
UT Martin (3-4) is fresh off an appearance in the Cancun Challenge, splitting the two matchups in Mexico last week. The Skyhawks fell 81-64 to eventual Mayan Division champion Gardner-Webb before recovering for an impressive 76-73 victory over Boston University.
Senior forward Quintin Dove was voted to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team after averaging 19.0 points and 5.5 rebounds over two games. Parker Stewart (game-high 25 points against Gardner-Webb) and Craig Randall II (game-high 25 points against Boston University) also provided plenty of offensive firepower while Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (11.0 points, team-best 6.5 rebounds per game) also paced UT Martin in the event.
Central Michigan (6-2) enters the contest ranking first out of 350 Division I men's basketball squads in scoring offense (95.1 points per game) and turnover margin (+8.9 per game). The Chippewas have eclipsed triple-digits on the scoreboard four times already this season, including a school-record 134 points in a victory over Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 10.
Last Saturday, Central Michigan improved to 6-0 at home with an 88-72 triumph over Youngstown State. Kevin McKay was responsible for his 14th career double-double (24 points, 11 rebounds) to guide four Chippewas who cracked double figures in the scoring column.
