The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will turn its focus to Ohio Valley Conference play with a road matchup at league rival Murray State on Thursday, Jan. 2. Tipoff from the CFSB Center is scheduled for 5 p.m. as the front end of a doubleheader and will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (4-7) enter league play looking to put a rigorous nonconference schedule in the rearview mirror while seeking the team's first road victory of the season. Overall, UT Martin faced four nationally ranked squads in No. 6 Louisville, No. 10 Mississippi State, No. 20 Arkansas and No. 23 Gonzaga while picking up four wins over Samford, IUPUI, Chattanooga and Lipscomb. The Skyhawks will look to rely on their recent success in league play, as the team has boasted a 127-41 record in OVC action since 2009-10.
UT Martin is led by the play of three-time OVC Player of the Week Chelsey Perry who enters the contest just 28 points away from becoming the 16th member of the program's 1,000-point club. Perry ranks amongst league leaders in points (18.8, second), rebounds (7.7, fourth), blocks (2.4, first) and minutes played (33.8, first) per game. Sophomore Damiah Griffin also averages in double figures, scoring 11.7 points per game while tallying seven games in double figures.
Skyhawk head coach Kevin McMillan enters his 11th season in the league posting a 127-41 record. Overall, McMillan has posted a 200-133 record and ranks as just the sixth head coach (men's or women's) in OVC history to eclipse the 200-win plateau.
Murray State (7-4) boasts a 4-1 mark in the CFSB Center this season. The Racers are led by the OVC's top scorer in sophomore guard Macey Turley who has been named OVC Player of the Week twice this season after averaging 19.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
Thursday's contest marks the 89th meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1970. UT Martin holds a 53-35 advantage in the series – including winning 19 of the last 22 matchups since 2010.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (analyst) will have the radio call on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - are located at the top of the webpage.
