MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2020 calendar year begins with an Ohio Valley Conference showdown for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad, as the Skyhawks make the short trip to Murray State to start league play. Tipoff from the CFSB Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2.
After UT Martin played its first game in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center in 50 days its last time out, the Skyhawks head back on the road to begin their chase for an OVC championship. This marks the sixth time that UT Martin has played the Racers in its league opener - including the program's OVC debut on Jan. 13, 1993.
The Skyhawks (4-7) passed their final nonconference test with flying colors, downing Mount St. Joseph by a 92-72 margin on Sunday. In that game, Parker Stewart (28), Quintin Dove (22) and Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (22) became the first UT Martin trio to each score at least 20 points in the same contest since Feb. 7, 2009 - a span of 340 games.
Currently leading the OVC in offensive rebounding are the Skyhawks, who haul in 12.5 offensive boards per outing. UT Martin also entered the week ranking in the top-10 nationally in fewest turnovers (11.8 per game, seventh) and fewest fouls (14.5 per game, 10th).
Dove shined in both meetings against Murray State last season, averaging 23.0 points and 11.0 rebounds while knocking down 63 percent (17-for-27) of his field goal attempts.
The Racers (7-5) have won three of their last four decisions, outscoring their opponents by 25.5 points per game over that same stretch. Murray State paces the OVC in scoring defense (61.3 points per game) and rebounding margin (+10.5).
Tevin Brown, who hit nine 3-pointers against the Skyhawks on Jan. 10, 2019, leads the Racers in scoring as a sophomore. He notched game-highs of 24 points and eight rebounds in Murray State's 81-46 win over Cumberland on Saturday.
The game can be viewed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (color) will have the radio call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links, in addition to a link for live stats, are located at the top of the webpage.
