The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will cap off the nonconference portion of the 2019-20 schedule with a road matchup at nationally ranked Southeastern Conference foe Arkansas on Sunday, Dec. 29. Tipoff from Bud Walton Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on SEC Network +.
The Skyhawks (4-6) enter the contest looking to square off against their fourth nationally ranked foe of the season. To date, the Skyhawks have matched up against No. 6 Louisville, No. 10 Mississippi State and No. 23 Gonzaga before Sunday's contest against No. 20 Arkansas. The Skyhawks are looking for their first win against a ranked foe, boasting a 0-38 all-time mark.
In UT Martin's most recent outing, the Skyhawks pushed No. 6 ranked Louisville to the brink before dropping the double-overtime matchup 71-63. The Skyhawks would lead for the first 37:58 of the contest before watching the lead go back and forth in the final minutes of regulation and the two overtime periods. Sophomore forward Damiah Griffin led all scorers in the contest with her first career double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Along with the scoring prowess of Griffin who averages 11.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, UT Martin is led by three-time Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Chelsey Perry. A Preseason All-OVC performer, Perry ranks second in the league with 18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game – including a 42-point performance earlier this season against Lipscomb.
UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan – a native of Arkadelphia, Ark. – is in his 11th season at the helm of the Skyhawks. McMillan has posted a 200-132 record to rank as the school's all-time wins leader.
Arkansas (11-1) ranks 20th nationally in both the AP and Coaches Polls. The Razorbacks feature Naismith Trophy nominee Chelsea Dungee who averages 20.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. In addition to Dungee, the trio of Amber Ramirez (13.8 ppg), Aleixs Tolefree (12.7 ppg) and Makalya Daniels (10.8 ppg) round out the top offensive contributors.
Sunday's contest marks the first meeting between the two programs in series history. The Skyhawks hold a 5-4 record against programs from the state of Arkansas (Arkansas State and Central Arkansas) under McMillan.
