MARTIN, Tenn. – After a grueling eight-game road stretch for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team, the Skyhawks finally return to the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Sunday, Dec. 29 to take on Mount St. Joseph to close out the 2019 calendar year. Tipoff time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Fans can meet Zoie the Weather Dog from WPSD Local 6 at the game. The lovable border collie joined the Local 6 television weather crew earlier this year and will be available for photos with all fans.
UT Martin (3-7) will play in front of its home crowd for the first time in 50 days as the Skyhawks returned to campus on Dec. 26 following Christmas break. This matchup serves as UT Martin's final tuneup before beginning Ohio Valley Conference play next week.
The Skyhawks have faced one of its toughest nonconference slates in recent history, playing against two currently ranked teams (No. 6 Baylor, No. 25 Wichita State) as well as an ETSU squad that is slotted fifth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll.
Last week against aforementioned Baylor, UT Martin stood its ground in the first half before falling 91-63 in Houston, Texas. The Skyhawks outrebounded the Big 12 Conference opponent, snatching 19 offensive rebounds in the process. Parker Stewart (18 points), Miles Thomas (17 points) and Quintin Dove (12 points) each scored in double-figures for UT Martin, who trailed by only one point late in the first half before the Bears caught fire over the final 20 minutes.
The Skyhawks are playing host to Mount St. Joseph (3-7) for the first time ever, as the NCAA Division III school out of Cincinnati, Ohio last competed in an exhibition at Bellarmine University two weeks ago. On Dec. 7, the Lions recorded an 85-59 conference victory over Earlham College - the same squad that UT Martin defeated by a 76-50 margin in an Oct. 31 exhibition.
Mount St. Joseph features just one upperclassmen on its 16-man roster. Brady Thomas leads the way for the Lions with 17.8 points per game, including a 32-point outburst (on 10-of-12 shooting) in the win over Earlham College.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ as Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Tom Britt (color) will also have the call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those direct links - as well as a link for live stats - are located at the top of the webpage.
