MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's squad goes for a sweep of college basketball's season-opening week as the Skyhawks play host to the ETSU Buccaneers for the first time in school history on Saturday, Nov. 9. Tipoff on ESPN+ is set for 7 p.m.
This contest serves as a "Stuttering Awareness Game". Each member of the UT Martin coaching staff will wear a lapel pin that was graciously donated by the National Stuttering Association.
The Skyhawks (1-0) are coming off a complete 106-48 triumph over St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Tuesday. UT Martin never trailed as Quintin Dove's 24 points paced five Skyhawks who scored in double figures. The stifling UT Martin defense forced 31 turnovers while limiting the Eutectics to a paltry 29 percent shooting effort from the floor (18-of-62).
Last December, the Skyhawks and ETSU met for the first time ever as the Buccaneers came away with an 80-62 win in Johnson City. Dove generated 18 points in just 23 minutes for UT Martin, who took a 38-33 advantage into the locker room at the halftime break. However, ETSU connected on 58.6 percent (17-of-29) of its field goal tries over the final 20 minutes to claim the comeback victory in a game that featured nine ties and 11 lead changes.
The Buccaneers (1-0) are currently ranked third in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll, trailing only Gonzaga and Saint Mary's. ETSU was voted first in the Southern Conference predicted order of finish and returns four starters from last season's 24-win squad - including Lou Henson Award preseason watch list recipient Jeromy Rodriguez (21 points, 16 rebounds against the Skyhawks last season).
Tray Boyd III - who tossed in 20 points against UT Martin last year - led the Buccaneers with 20 points off the bench in the Buccaneers' season-opening 79-50 win over Newberry College on Wednesday.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and John Thornton (color) will have the radio call on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - are located at the top of the webpage.
