MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team plays outside the United States for the first time in program history when it takes part in the Cancun Challenge held at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
The Skyhawks arrived at sunny Playa del Carmen around 4 p.m. local time today and held a light practice this evening. UT Martin is one of four teams to make up the Mayan Division of the 2019 Cancun Challenge, joining the likes of Boston University, Gardner-Webb and Northern Colorado. The tournament is also comprised of a Riviera Division that consists of Northern Iowa, South Carolina, West Virginia and Wichita State.
The tournament opens on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when the Skyhawks take on Gardner-Webb at 11:30 a.m. CST. UT Martin will then square off against either Boston University or Northern Colorado on Wednesday, Nov. 27 (11:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. CST tipoff, depending on Tuesday's result) before heading back to campus on Thanksgiving Day.
The Skyhawks (2-3) are the seventh Ohio Valley Conference program to play in the Cancun Challenge. Past OVC representatives include Jacksonville State (2018), Southeast Missouri (2017), Eastern Kentucky (2016), Austin Peay (2012), SIUE (2011) and Morehead State (2008). OVC squads are 6-6 all-time in Cancun Challenge games played in Mexico.
UT Martin will face stiff competition this week, as its first opponent Gardner-Webb returns 10 players from a team that won 23 games last season. Boston University dialed up a 78-70 road win at South Carolina last Tuesday and feature a veteran team that brought back 11 players and four starters from 2018-19. Similarly, Northern Colorado boasts 11 returners (including four starters) from last season's team who reeled off 21 victories.
