MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team squares off against the Wichita State Shockers for the first time ever on Saturday, Nov. 16 as the Skyhawks take part in the preliminary rounds of the Cancun Challenge. Tipoff time from Wichita, Kan. is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
UT Martin (2-1) passed its first road test with flying colors, defeating Western Illinois in a 98-91 thriller on Wednesday. In that game, the Skyhawks trailed by 15 points with less than 13 minutes remaining but Parker Stewart tossed in 12 straight UT Martin points over a 126-second stretch. Derek Hawthorne, Jr. followed with eight consecutive points to tilt the score back in favor of the Skyhawks with 7:18 left to play and UT Martin never trailed from that point forward.
Stewart collected career-highs of 32 points and 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. He became the first Skyhawk to notch at least 30 points as part of a double-double against a Division I opponent since Dec. 21, 2013.
Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Quintin Dove also continued his blazing start to the 2019-20 campaign, scoring 20 points in the triumph at Western Illinois. The OVC's top scorer becomes the first UT Martin player to open a season with three consecutive 20-plus-point performances since two-time All-American Lester Hudson accomplished the feat in 2008-09.
Wichita State is off to an unblemished 2-0 start to its campaign, soaring to home victories over Omaha (68-54 on Nov. 5) and Texas Southern (69-63 on Nov. 9). So far this season, the Shockers have emphasized protecting the ball as they entered the week ranking third nationally in fewest turnovers per game (7.5).
In the win over Texas Southern, Erik Stevenson's game-high 22 points led the way while Dexter Dennis (19) and Grant Sherfield (13) also reached double figures in the scoring column. Wichita State overcame a halftime deficit by getting to the charity stripe, swishing 34 of its 42 attempts from the free throw line (81 percent).
