The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will hit the road for an Ohio Valley Conference matchup against in-state foe Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Oct. 12. Kickoff from Tucker Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Saturday's game marks the first of three games in the coveted Sergeant York Trophy series which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four OVC football-playing schools located in the state of Tennessee – Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin. UT Martin has won or shared the Sgt. York Trophy six times in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Skyhawks hold a 25-10 all-time record in the series – the best mark of the four Tennessee OVC schools. That includes a 16-4 mark since 2012.
The Skyhawks (3-2, 2-0 OVC) were named the STATS FCS Team of the Week after an impressive road victory at Eastern Kentucky last weekend by a score of 38-28 to remain unbeaten in OVC play. UT Martin pounded the ball on the ground, tallying a season-high 234 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the game. On defense, UT Martin would limit an EKU squad that entered the game averaging 243.8 rushing yards per game to just 94 yards on the ground, ranking as the third time the Skyhawks have held its opponent to less than 100 rushing yards this season.
UT Martin currently ranks first in rushing defense (56.5 ypg), scoring defense (17.5 ppg), total defense (338.0 ypg), punt return average (24.7 ypr), sacks by (3.0), kickoff coverage (42.2 ypg), first downs (25.5), opponent fourth down percentage (0.0) and time of possession (37:39) in OVC play.
Tennessee Tech (4-2, 1-1 OVC) has seen a resurgence this season, receiving votes in both national polls after tallying three wins over FCS opponents. The Golden Eagles saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt last weekend when they dropped a 43-37 decision in double-overtime at No. 23 ranked Southeast Missouri. TTU enters the game averaging 37.0 points per game and 425.3 yards of total offense.
The Golden Eagles are led by the play of sophomore quarterback Bailey Fisher who has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 1,538 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 217 yards to average 292.5 yards of total offense per game. Meanwhile, freshman Metrius Fleming has burst onto the scene with 27 catches for 427 yards while tallying 322 kick return yards en route to being named OVC Newcomer of the Week four times this season.
This marks the 37th meeting between UT Martin and Tennessee Tech in a series dating back to 1926. The Golden Eagles hold a 22-16-2 series advantage but the Skyhawks have held their own as of late, winning six consecutive matchups while outscoring the Golden Eagles 182-80 during that span.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color), John Hatler (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis. WUTM, UT Martin's award-winning student radio station, will also broadcast the game on 90.3 FM.
