BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - For the sixth year in a row, the Ohio Valley Conference has conducted a Preseason Women's Media Poll prior to the start of the season. In total 15 voters from around the league cast a ballot on whom they thought would be the 2019-20 basketball favorites and preseason players of the year.
The OVC will release its official preseason poll and All-OVC team – as voted on by league head coaches and sports information directors – on Tuesday, October 22 during the league's annual Media Day in Evansville.
The media panel picked Belmont as the preseason favorites. Belmont senior forward Ellie Harmeyer was named OVC Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year.
Belmont picked up 11 of the 15 first-place votes and 175 points total en route to being tabbed favorites. Tennessee Tech was picked second with two first-place votes and 156 points while UT Martin was selected third with one first-place vote and 155 points. Morehead State notched the other first-place vote and finished with 122 points overall. The poll was rounded out by Austin Peay (119), Jacksonville State (92), Southeast Missouri (87), SIUE (82), Murray State (78), Eastern Illinois (50), Tennessee State (32) and Eastern Kentucky (22).
The Skyhawks return 12 players from a team that went 23-9 a season ago, finished second in the league standings and advanced to the program's seventh OVC Basketball Championship title game in the last nine years. UT Martin features four starters back from last year's squad in Zaire Hicks (8.6 ppg), Brittni Moore (8.5 ppg), Chelsey Perry (12.0 ppg, 71 blocks) and Maddie Waldrop (8.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg).
UT Martin will officially open the season on Wednesday, Nov. 6 with a matchup against Saint Louis. The Skyhawks will make their Kathleen and Tom Elam Center debut on Thursday, Nov. 21. For season tickets, go to www.UTMSports.com/tickets or call 731-881-7207.
