MARTIN, Tenn. – After a brief one-week hiatus, the University of Tennessee at Martin is back in the top-10 of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association rankings, as the new Farnam poll was unveiled today.
The Skyhawks have reclaimed their spot at No. 10 after also appearing 10th in the NCEA preseason standings and in the Oct. 1 edition of the rankings. Today's announcement marks the 25th week that UT Martin has been nationally ranked since the start of the 2017-18 season.
On the heels of an unblemished homestand against South Dakota State and former No. 10 Delaware State last week, the Skyhawks are back in the national limelight. Earlier today, Devon Woods and Tess Baumann were named as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Riders of the Week in horsemanship and reining, respectively.
In the home wins over South Dakota State and Delaware State, UT Martin displayed a dominant Western performance – outscoring the opposition by a combined 13-4 margin. That included a 7-2 edge in horsemanship and a 6-2 margin in reining.
The Skyhawks garnered seven of the eight MOP's, led by Kelby Kane's double MOP effort in fences and flat against Delaware State. Paige Benson (horsemanship) and Noel Meadows (reining) also dialed up top honors against the Hornets while Abbie Hopkins (flat), Woods (horsemanship) and Baumann (reining) nabbed MOP status against South Dakota State.
A total of 13 different UT Martin riders combined to score at least one victory last week, nine of which went unbeaten. Hopkins and Kane were each 2-0 in flat, the trio of Lucy Eier, Benson and Woods were all 2-0 in horsemanship and Baumann went 2-0 in reining. Additionally, Bailey Newlin (horsemanship), Hannah McDonald (reining) and Meadows (reining) each went 1-0-1 last week.
Auburn came in at No. 1 in today's rankings while Georgia, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and TCU rounded out the top five. Those teams were followed by No. 6 SMU, No. 7 South Carolina, No. 8 Baylor, No. 9 Fresno State and No. 10 UT Martin.
