WACO, Texas – Less than a week after the University of Tennessee at Martin pulled off an impressive win over nationally ranked Georgia, a total of four Skyhawks were spotlighted by the United Equestrian Conference as its Riders of the Week. Kenzie Mezrah (equitation on the flat), Kelby Kane (equitation over fences), Tess Baumann (horsemanship) and Noel Meadows (reining) were the UT Martin representatives to receive the awards.
The four Skyhawks helped pace UT Martin to a big victory in its spring opener, downing the No. 6 ranked team in the land by an 11-9 margin on Jan. 24. It marked the Skyhawks' first outright victory over a ranked opponent since Feb. 24, 2017 while it was the first victory over a Southeastern Conference opponent in school history.
Mezrah picked quite a time for her first career MOP, as the sophomore out of Tampa, Fla. scored 87 points in her season debut. Her 15-point margin of victory was the most in equitation on the flat as she helped UT Martin nab three of the five awarded points in the event.
Hailing from Lexington, Ky., Kane won her head-to-head matchup in equitation over fences with a score of 83 points. It was the team-best fifth victory in the freshman season of Kane, who also captured UEC equitation over fences and equitation on the flat Rider of the Week honors on Nov. 5.
Baumann dialed up 76.5 points on her way to MOP accolades in horsemanship, defeating her counterpart by three full points. As a direct result, the sophomore from Redmond, Wash. earned her second consecutive MOP performance and third UEC weekly mention of the season (also winning horsemanship and reining Rider of the Month accolades on Nov. 5).
A sophomore from Staunton, Va., Meadows aided the Skyhawks to the finish line with an MOP effort in reining. Her 72 points helped UT Martin take four of out the five points in the event that flipped an 8-7 deficit into an 11-9 triumph for the Skyhawks. It was Meadows' team-high sixth win in reining and her second MOP of the 2018-19 campaign.
UT Martin returns to action next week for a busy stretch of competitions. The Skyhawks head to the Yellowhammer State on Friday, Feb. 8 to face No. 1 Auburn and South Dakota State before hosting Ole Miss and Mississippi State at home on Sunday, Feb. 10.
