BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field team opened the spring indoor season on Saturday with an impressive start at the UAB Vulcan Invite held at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena.
After a primer back in December to open the indoor season, the Skyhawks returned to action in the Vulcan Invite with a strong showing by a number of competitors. The meet also gave the Skyhawks a glimpse of the venue where the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track Championships will be held in mid-February.
The Skyhawks shook off the offseason rust in stride with a number of personal-records across the squad while tallying a pair of program records and two event titles.
The first school record fell in the men's 200m dash when redshirt-freshman Tyreke Sapp posted broke a 19-year program record with a time of 21:48 to win the event. Another school record – this time in the men's 3k where Ryan Ford got the distance events started with a school record and a first place finish amongst participants with a time of 8:26.3.
On the sprint side, freshman Chandler Robinson made her presence known in the building. Robinson notch a PR in the women's 60m deter with a top-10 finish at 8.09 seconds. Then in the men's 60m hurdles, freshman Brady Fry notched a PR at 8.35 seconds. Robinson then returned to action as part of the women's 4x400m relay squad with Jasmyn Pilcher, Anndrea Chester and Joy Abbott to post a time of 4:12.46.
The Skyhawks posted another individual title in the men's 800m behind the effort of junior Leonel Perez, placing first with a time of 1:53.47. Another Skyhawk tasted individual victory as Jhon-Wes Walker won his heat in the mile run.
In the men's 5k, sophomore Lenny Baumann began his indoor season on a strong note with a third place finish with a time of 15:50.41. Meanwhile, in the women's 5k, junior Lydia Lee and freshman Breanna Roy finished second and third, respectively. Lee crossed at 18:53.65 while Roy posted a big PR at 18:57.33.
Wrapping it up with the women's 3k event, the pair of Breanna Alderton and Alexis Grandys were impressive. Alderton would post a huge PR for her career en route to finishing second with a time of 10:11.9 while Grandys finished sixth at 10:23.33.
"The athletes have done such a great job of laying the foundation of fitness during the winter break," UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton said. "However, what I was most impressed with today is the hunger to compete across the board. Our upperclassmen showed the way for some of our younger athletes. They demonstrated the pride we have when we put the uniform on. The season looks bright."
UT Martin will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the John Craft Invite hosted by Eastern Illinois.
