MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team wraps up a brief two-game homestand when it squares off against in-state Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff on Saturday, Jan. 12 is set for approximately 3:30 p.m., as the game is the second game of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk women's squad.
Although the Governors won both matchups last season, the Skyhawks have claimed six of the last nine games in the series. Since 2013, each of the six games between these two squads in the Elam Center have been decided by single digits.
UT Martin (5-9, 0-3 OVC) traded blows with defending league champion Murray State before falling by a 98-77 margin on Thursday. The game featured five ties and five lead changes in the first half but ultimately the Skyhawks ran out of gas despite a 42-32 edge in rebounding.
The frontcourt tandem of Quintin Dove (career-highs of 27 points, nine rebounds) and Jailen Gill (career-best 21 points in 22 minutes) carried UT Martin against Murray State. It marked the first time that a Skyhawk duo had generated 20-plus point performances against a Division I opponent since Dec. 5, 2017.
In conference play, the Skyhawks lead the OVC in offensive rebounding (15.0 per game) and three-point field goals made (9.7 per outing). Dove's average of 15.7 points per game paces five different UT Martin players who toss in double-figures scoring against OVC opposition.
Austin Peay (11-5, 3-0 OVC) enters the contest as winners in nine of its last 10 games, as the Governors, Murray State and Jacksonville State are the only teams to begin the OVC slate with an unblemished 3-0 record.
On Thursday, Austin Peay never trailed in a convincing 78-60 victory at Southeast Missouri. Reigning OVC Freshman of the Year Terry Taylor led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds for the Governors, who rank atop the league in rebounding margin (+4.0).
