The Skyhawks (1-4, 1-1 OVC) dropped its first Ohio Valley Conference matchup of the season in an offensive affair which saw both teams combine to total 914 yards of offense and 83 points. While the offensive numbers proved to be gaudy, it was the team's pair of turnovers and lack of key stops and conversions throughout the game which saw the Skyhawks drop their second straight decision to their regional rival.
Sophomore quarterback Dresser Winn notched his third 300-yard passing game of the season as he completed 33-of-52 attempts for 331 yards, three touchdowns – two passing and one rushing - and an interception. His first touchdown came on a four-yard pass to Terry Williams while his second came on a 25-yard strike to Jaylon Moore. He also found the endzone with a two-yard quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter.
Senior LaDarius Galloway paced the ground attack with 15 carries for 66 yards while junior Jaimiee Bowe tallied seven carries for 28 yards and a pair of touchdown. With the two touchdowns, Bowe moved his career total up to 15 which ranks tied for ninth on the program's all-time career rushing touchdowns list – tying Trent Garland and Nate Holmes on the list.
Williams – a junior wide receiver – once again put on a show, ranking as the team's most dependable receiver by notching 11 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown. The game marked Williams' second 100-yard game of the season while ranking as his third game with at least 10 receptions. Moore also posted a big night along with his touchdown, tallying seven receptions for 94 yards.
The Skyhawk defense was led once again by reigning Madness National Player of the Week Garrett Wall with eight tackles. Junior Julian Crutchfield paced the team with 1.5 sacks on the day while Austin Pickett tallied the other half-sack on the day. As a team, the squad would tally six tackles for loss while Sherrod Pittman notched his first career interception to stop a scoring drive in the third.
"As good as we played and felt last week, this about is bad as we feel now," UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. "Give Murray State, their quarterback, skill players and coaches credit. They made plays and we didn't. We are in Game 5 of the season and we need to be able to get a signal from the sideline and run the right play. It was a total team loss and I'm very disappointed. Now we go into the off week and we will try to fix some things."
Murray State (1-3, 1-0 OVC) picked up its first victory of the season behind a strong home crowd of 11,000-plus. Drew Anderson led the Racers' offensive attack with 21-of-32 pass completions for 373 yards and four total touchdowns – including three passing and one rushing. Malik Honeycutt led the receiving core with five catches for 137 yards while Dequan Dallas (two) and Jensen Feggins (one) tallied touchdown receptions.
UT Martin will look to regroup over the team's bye week before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 against Eastern Kentucky. Kickoff from Hardy Graham Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
