The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will return to action after a bye week with an Ohio Valley Conference matchup against league rival Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 13. Kickoff from Hardy M. Graham Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. and also serves as a 1990's UT Martin Football Alumni Celebration.
The game serves as a matchup of two of the best OVC programs in recent history. Since 2008, Eastern Kentucky (63) and UT Martin (62) rank second and third, respectively, in league victories. The two programs have combined for nine top-two OVC finishes during that span.
The Skyhawks (1-4, 1-1 OVC) are hoping that the recent bye week came at the perfect time, serving as a reset to a season which has seen inconsistent play on both sides of the ball. UT Martin will look to a stable of offensive playmakers to turn the trend. Sophomore Dresser Winn made his first career start against EKU last season while rounding into form amongst the nation's leaders. Winn currently ranks in the top-25 nationally in completions per game (26.0, 5th), passing yards per game (270.6 ypg, 15th), passing yards (1,353, 16th), total offense (284.4 ypg, 18th), completion percentage (65%, 21st), points responsible for (78, 24th) and passing touchdowns (10, 25th).
Defensively, the Skyhawks rank second in the OVC in rushing defense (136.8 ypg) and will be put to the test against the Colonels. Kevin Prather, Jr. leads the squad with 44 tackles on the season along with 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. As a whole, the linebacker trio of Prather, James Gilleylen and Garrett Wall have combined for 113 tackles and 17.5 tackles for loss on the year.
Eastern Kentucky (2-3, 1-1 OVC) enters the matchup coming off a 56-7 setback to No. 8 ranked Jacksonville State its last time out. The Colonels saw its potent rushing attack (242.2 yards per game) struggle against the Gamecocks in a game which EKU posted just 147 yards of total offense. As a whole, EKU ranks third in the OVC in rushing offense, scoring defense (33.4 ppg), total defense (403.4 ypg), rushing defense (161.2 ypg) and pass defense (242.2 ypg).
UT Martin is led by 13th-year head coach Jason Simpson who enters the contest boasting a 79-63 mark overall – ranking seventh in OVC history. Eastern Kentucky head coach Mark Elder has posted a 9-18 mark in his third season at the helm.
Saturday's contest marks the 29th matchup between UT Martin and Eastern Kentucky with the Colonels holding a significant advantage in the series with a 24-4 mark. Despite the lopsided margin, all four of the program's victories have occurred during the Jason Simpson era.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color), John Hatler (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis.
