MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin fall tennis season begins this weekend when the Skyhawks travel to the APSU Fall Invitational, hosted by Austin Peay on Friday, Sept. 14 and Saturday, Sept. 15.
Seven-time Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year Dennis Taylor is in his 32nd season overseeing Skyhawk tennis, as his 528 career victories rank fifth amongst active NCAA Division I head women's tennis coaches.
The Skyhawks will look to rely on their experience in 2018-19, as almost half of the roster (four of nine) are seniors. That talented group of Olha Burak, Asel Jumamukhambetova, Andrea Plantada and Jemima Potter have combined for 270 career victories at UT Martin, including an astounding 94-44 (.681 winning percentage) record against OVC opposition.
All seven returners saw action in OVC singles matches last season, as Potter (5-4), Mizuki Sakurai (4-3) and Jule Streif (1-1) each posted a .500 or better record against league foes. Overall, Jumamukhambetova's nine singles wins paced the Skyhawks.
In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Jumamukhambetova and Potter each tied for the team lead with 13 victories. The teams of Jumamukhambetova/Potter and Plantada/Amelia Campbell each recorded 6-2 OVC records as UT Martin dominated doubles action with a 14-7 mark against league rivals.
Also expected to make their Skyhawk debuts in this tournament is freshman Daphne Pratt. Pratt comes to UT Martin after she was a top-ranked under-18 prospect out of Colfe's School in London, England.
After accounting for a 73-5 overall record and three straight Delaware team state championships during her prep career at Caesar Rodney High School, freshman Natasha Sijan is currently sidelined after shoulder surgery and will miss an extended period of time.
The APSU Fall Invitational is the first of five tournaments – as well as a pair of head-to-head matchups – slated for the Skyhawks during the fall. UT Martin will host the Skyhawk Fall Invite on Sept. 28-29 before opening its spring campaign on Feb. 7.
