MARTIN, Tenn. – On the heels of one of its best seasons in school history, the University of Tennessee at Martin has been ranked No. 10 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association preseason rankings.
The Skyhawks, who were ranked in the top-10 in 16 consecutive polls last season, return 28 riders from last season's squad. That list includes 2018 NCEA All-Americans Abbie Hopkins (equitation over fences) and Noel Meadows (reining) – who also won United Equestrian Conference Freshman of the Year honors in their respective events alongside teammate Devon Woods (horsemanship).
Last season, UT Martin earned a spot in each of the four discipline championships at the NCEA Championships. The Skyhawks advanced to the national quarterfinals in equitation over fences while knocking off a trio of nationally ranked opponents during the 2017-18 regular season.
Defending national champion Auburn was ranked No. 1 in today's preseason poll, followed by Georgia at No. 2. Texas A&M (No. 3), Oklahoma State (No. 4) and TCU (No. 5) round out the top-five while SMU (No. 6), Baylor (No. 7), South Carolina (No. 8) and Fresno State (No. 9) follow suit.
UT Martin officially begins the 2018-19 campaign with a home showdown against aforementioned No. 1 Auburn. The meet will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
