MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team responded from a shaky second round to post its best score of the tournament today to close out the Murray State Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
The Skyhawks carded a 281 (-3) today, bringing their three-round total to 860 (+8). That score ranked fourth out of 12 teams in the final standings as UT Martin jumped up one spot from Day 1 of the tournament.
Individually, Ross Redmont carried over yesterday's momentum by posting his third consecutive round at below par. The redshirt junior out of Memphis, Tenn. tallied a 68 to finish the 54-hole event in second place out of 72 competitors with a 207 (-6). That marked the best finish in his career as he led the tournament in par-5 scoring (4.33, -6) and birdies (15).
"I'm very proud of Ross' performance in this tournament," Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "He is playing well right now and you can't ask for much better than three straight under-par rounds."
The trio of Tate Chumley, Nick Wolf and Cameron Smith each tallied par performances during today's final round. It was the best score of the tournament for both Chumley and Wolf while Smith equaled his first round score as the best of his opening week.
Shelden Barina showed the most improvement of any UT Martin player, as the freshman was responsible for a 72 (+1) this morning.
The Skyhawks had three players competing as individuals, as Peyton Dix and Mason Chandler each finished with a 75 (+4) while Jack Story shot a 79 (+8) today.
Overall, Chumley finished the tournament with a score of 215 (+2) while Wolf carded a 217 (+4). Smith and Barina completed UT Martin's scoring lineup with final tallies of 223 (+10) and 231 (+18), respectively.
Dix wrapped up his tournament with a 223 (+10) while Chandler and Story weren't too far behind with 224's (+11). Chandler's 38 pars in the tournament were the most of any Skyhawk and ranked eighth in the tournament field.
"This was a good tournament to get us started," Carpenter said. "We had an opportunity to see what we have, who can consistently perform and rise to the top. All of our players will have plenty more opportunities to play more this fall as we are still evaluating our lineup."
UT Martin now faces a quick turnaround as it will head to Richmond, Ky. for the Raising Canes Intercollegiate, hosted by Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 15-16.
