MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country program saw both its men's and women's programs garner a regional ranking by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday afternoon in the Preseason South Region Rankings.
With the nation's Division I cross country programs split into nine geographical regions, UT Martin competes in the South Region which includes the state of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
UT Martin's men's squad debuts at No. 12 after a strong finish to last season's schedule saw the Skyhawks cap off the year with a 13th place recognition. Meanwhile, the Skyhawk women's squad jumped into the preseason rankings as well, assuming the final spot at No. 15.
"For both teams to be recognized regionally is a great moment for our program," said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. "To see the how hard our kids have worked and to be rewarded in this manner is exciting. We are pleased with where we are currently ranked and there is a lot of work left to be done, but we aren't satisfied with just being in the conversation, we are making steps to become a top-10 regional program year in and year out."
UT Martin will take its regional rankings on the road this weekend with an appearance at the Memphis Twilight Classic in Memphis on Saturday, Sept. 1. The women's race is scheduled for 9:20 p.m. followed by the men's race at 10 p.m.
