CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin track and field squads opened the indoor portion of the schedule at the Saluki Fast Start meet hosted by Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill. on Saturday.
With the first track opportunity of the indoor season, it allowed the Skyhawk athletes to break off the rust and get into racing form. Most of these athletes have been training since August in order to be in form for the indoor season.
On the men's side, it was the sprints crew which proved impressive. Redshirt freshman Tyreke Sapp took first overall in the men's 200 meter with a time of 21.97. Fellow freshman Brady Fry also posted an impressive debut in a Skyhawk uniform as he took first overall in the 60m hurdles, posting a time of 8.34 seconds, while also notching a top-10 finish in the 200-meter dash.
For the women, Saturday's meet marked the first competition for many of the new Skyhawks. Freshman Joy Abbott opened her season placing fourth in the 60-meter sprint with a time of 7.77 seconds. She later went on to notch a top-10 finish in the 200-meter run at 27.07 seconds. Meanwhile the pair of Jasmyn Pilcher and Anndrea Chester took fourth and fifth in the 400 meter – finishing within .03 seconds of each other – with times of 1:02.22 and 1:02.25, respectively.
The Skyhawks will have more than a month to train before their next meet as UT Martin will return to action at the Vulcan Invitational held in Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday, Jan. 12.
