12/28/2018 9:28:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will look to knock the dust off the team's sneakers after playing just its second game in the past three weeks when serving host to SWAC foe Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, Dec. 29. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (7-3) are looking to wrap a bow on top of a strong non-conference schedule which has featured seven wins overall while the squad has posted a perfect 5-0 mark in the confines of the Elam Center. In the team's most recent contest back on Dec. 19, UT Martin defeated Alabama Huntsville 100-69 in a game in which five different Skyhawks scored in double figures. Sophomore Zaire Hicks led all scorers in double figures with a career-high 19 points while freshman Brittni Moore also posted a career-performance to earn adidas OVC Freshman of the Week honors with 13 points and five rebounds in the victory. The win also marked the 300th victory for UT Martin at home in program history.
UT Martin boasts three players who are averaging in double figures offensively. Freshman Damiah Griffin leads the way with 11.4 points, 3.9 rebounds per game while Chelsey Perry (11.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and Aundrea Adams (10.8 ppg, 3.9 rpg) help highlight the Skyhawks.
Skyhawk head coach Kevin McMillan enters the contest with a career mark of 180-120 in his 10th season at UT Martin. McMillan needs one more win to move into a tie for fourth on the OVC's all-time wins leaderboard with former Tennessee Tech head coach Marynell Medors.
Mississippi Valley State enters the contest with a 1-9 mark with Saturday's game marking the ninth road game for the Devilettes on the season. The squad is currently in the middle of a seven-game losing streak with the team's lone win coming against OVC foe Austin Peay back on Nov. 19. The Devilettes are led offensively by Kristy Parker with 13.6 points per game.
Saturday's contest marks the third matchup between the two programs in series history with UT Martin holding a narrow 2-0 advantage. This is Mississippi Valley State's first visit to Martin in series history.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Tom Britt bring you the action.
