MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team clashes against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers for the first time in over two decades at EA Diddle Arena on Saturday, Nov. 10. Tipoff time from Bowling Green, Ky. is set for 6 p.m.
This marks the fourth all-time meeting between the Skyhawks and Western Kentucky. After the Hilltoppers won the first two matchups in Bowling Green (75-61 on Nov. 30, 1991, 73-56 on Nov. 29, 1996), the Skyhawks claimed a 70-67 home win in the last meeting on Jan. 26, 1998.
UT Martin (1-0) soared to a 91-58 triumph in its season opener on Tuesday, defeating in-state NAIA foe Cumberland at home. The Skyhawks placed five scorers in double figures, led by Delfincko Bogan's 17 points off the bench. Kevin Little added 16 points while Derek Hawthorne, Jr. registered 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in his UT Martin debut. Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference honoree Fatodd Lewis (14 points) and Parrish Hewitt (12 points) also helped contribute to a Skyhawk offense that sank 50.8 percent (30-for-59) of their field goal tries.
Western Kentucky (0-1) also started its season on Tuesday, falling by a 73-55 margin at No. 24 Washington. The Hilltoppers led 36-27 at the halftime break before the Huskies connected on 53.6 percent (15-of-28) of their shots over the final 20 minutes. Former Austin Peay swingman Jared Savage tossed in a team-high 15 points in his Western Kentucky debut while Charles Bassey (No. 6 ranked recruit in the nation) snagged 11 points and 12 rebounds in his first collegiate game.
One season after notching 27 victories on their way to a berth in the NIT championship game, the Hilltoppers were tabbed as Conference USA preseason favorites. Taveion Hollingsworth (14 points against Washington) and Auburn graduate transfer Desean Murray were each named to the Preseason All-Conference USA squad for third-year head coach Rick Stansbury.
