WACO, Texas – Kelby Kane and Tess Baumann, both student-athletes at the University of Tennessee at Martin, each picked up a pair of United Equestrian Conference Rider of the Week accolades, the NCEA announced today.
The Skyhawk duo earned their awards based off standout performances against No. 5 South Carolina last Friday. Kane was named UEC Equitation on the Flat Rider of the Week and UEC Equitation over Fences Rider of the Week. Baumann nabbed UEC Horsemanship Rider of the Week and UEC Reining Rider of the Week accolades.
A freshman from Lexington, Ky., Kane captured MOP honors in equitation on the flat after an event-best 73-point performance on Dawson, defeating her Gamecock counterpart by four points.
That victory capped off a perfect day for Kane, who earlier in the day compiled 75 points on Castello for a head-to-head win in equitation over fences. She edged out her South Carolina opponent by two points.
Baumann came through for an MOP effort in horsemanship, as her 75-point performance aboard Shadow was the best score in the field. She bested her Gamecock opponent by 1.5 points as she made her first horsemanship appearance since the season opener.
Moments later, the sophomore out of Redmond, Wash. posted yet another MOP honor in reining. Baumann's 72.5 points were the most in the event as she chalked up a 1.5-point victory over South Carolina's representative.
On the season, Kane boasts team-highs in scoring average (75.8), wins (three) and MOP's (two) in equitation on the flat. She also paces UT Martin in victories (four) while tallying one MOP and a 74.4 scoring average in equitation over fences.
Baumann's two MOP's and 68.9 scoring average in reining are a team-high as she has accrued top honors in back-to-back competitions. In horsemanship, she carries a team-best 72.8 scoring average and has one of the two Skyhawk MOP's on the year.
UT Martin closes out its fall schedule later this month when it travels to Dover, Del. for a pair of competitions against Delaware State and SMU on Nov. 16.
