MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad goes for its third straight home victory when it hosts the UNC Asheville Bulldogs out of the Big South Conference on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tipoff time from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (2-2) have won seven of its last eight matchups against Big South opponents, including its only previous meeting against UNC Asheville. That game was part of the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, as UT Martin secured its first-ever postseason home victory with an 89-75 triumph over the Bulldogs in the first round of the event.
The well-rested Skyhawks are seeing their first action in nearly a week-and-a-half, as they are coming off an exhilarating 92-90 victory over Western Illinois on Nov. 21. In that game, Preston Parks accounted for one of the most memorable UT Martin debuts in recent memory. The Citadel transfer piled up all of his game-high 21 points in the second half while Delfincko Bogan swished the go-ahead free throws with 0.8 seconds to play to cap off a win after the Skyhawks trailed by double-digits with four minutes remaining.
In addition to Parks, Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (15), Quintin Dove (14), Bogan (13), Fatodd Lewis (11) and Parrish Hewitt (10) generated big scoring performances in the win over Western Illinois. That marked the first time since Jan. 2, 2016 that six Skyhawks reached double-figures in the scoring column.
UNC Asheville, who won the 2017-18 Big South Conference regular season championship before taking USC to double overtime in the NIT, are 1-5 and will be looking to snap a five-game losing skid. The Bulldogs' last outing was a 65-51 home setback to undefeated Furman last Sunday. Tajion Jones (14 points) and Cress Worthy (10 points) paced UNC Asheville offensively but the Bulldogs could not overcome 18 turnovers, which turned into 21 Furman points.
