The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday by opening a four-game road swing with a matchup at Big Ten foe Northwestern on Sunday, Nov. 25. Tipoff from Welsh-Ryan Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks (4-1) are riding a hot pace dropping just one contest this year – a road matchup at IUPUI back on Nov. 13. Since then UT Martin has defeated Arkansas State (97-91 in overtime) while cruising past Christian Brothers (108-82) its last time out. While the Skyhawks have benefited from playing at home for much of its non-conference schedule, Sunday's matchup marks the first of four consecutive road games, opening a string against Northwestern, Chattanooga, Louisville and Lipscomb.
UT Martin is led by the play of Chelsey Perry so far this season with a team-high 13.2 points per game. Meanwhile junior Aundrea Adams (12.6 ppg) has tallied back-to-back 21-point performances against Arkansas State and Christian Brothers while Damiah Griffin (11.8 ppg) was named adidas OVC Freshman of the Week for her strong play as of late. As a whole, the Skyhawks average 92.2 points per game while forcing their opponents into an average of 24.8 turnovers per contest.
Northwestern enters the contest boasting a perfect 4-0 mark with victories over Green Bay, Duke, UIC and Florida left behind in its wake. The Wildcats have dismantled their opponents for the most part, averaging a 20-point margin of victory in the four contests. The squad features four players who average in double figures led by the play of Lindsey Pulliam with 18.5 points per game. The trio of Abi Scheid (14.3 ppg), Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah (13.0 ppg, 13.5 rpg) and Jordan Hamilton (12.5 ppg) fill out the balanced scoring attack.
A pair of veteran head coaches will patrol the sidelines for both squads. In Kevin McMillan's 10 seasons at the helm of the Skyhawks, he has taken the program to new heights with seven postseason appearances and five Ohio Valley Conference championships while posting a 177-118 record which currently ranks fifth in league history. Meanwhile, Joe McKeown has posted a 674-332 career mark while going 165-158 in his 11 seasons at Northwestern.
Sunday's contest marks the fourth meeting between the two programs with Northwestern holding a 3-0 advantage in the series history which dates back to 2012.
