WACO, Texas – The first set of National Colllegiate Equestrian Association event rankings were announced today, as the NCEA selection committee ranked the University of Tennessee at Martin in the top-12 in all four phases.
Beginning last year, the NCEA national championship format was changed where four event titles are also included based off a head-to-head bracket format in each of the four events that comprise a head-to-head in-season meet. In addition to a national team championship and national discipline titles in Hunter Seat and Western, schools are now able to nab national championships in equitation over fences, equitation on the flat, horsemanship and reining.
Event rankings are determined at each head-to-head competitions based on a variety of data points (win/loss, home/away, rank of opponent, etc.) The event rankings are based solely on the results from the single event in a head-to-head meet and may differ from the NCEA team rankings that are released every week throughout the season.
Last season, the Skyhawks qualified for all four event championships, winning their first round matchup in equitation over fences before falling to No. 1 seed Texas A&M in the national quarterfinals.
UT Martin appears eighth in today's equitation on the flat rankings, carrying a 72.7 single-rider average with 11 team victories on the season. The Skyhawks are ranked No. 12 in the equitation over fences ranking system, averaging a 70.5 score per rider with 11 team points in 2018.
In horsemanship, UT Martin can be found in the ninth slot – piling up a 71.1 per-rider average with nine team points. The Skyhawks come in at No. 10 on the national rankings in reining, averaging 67.2 points per scorer to go along with 13 team points on the season.
UT Martin has three regular season competitions this spring before hosting the United Equestrian Conference championship on March 21-23. The 2019 NCEA Championships will follow in Waco, Texas on April 17-20.
