MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in over two weeks, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team will play in front of the home crowd as the Skyhawks take on Western Illinois in a pre-Thanksgiving matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
This matchup is the first between these two schools in 15 years. UT Martin emerged victorious in that contest - a 96-67 victory as part of the Guardians Classic tournament on Nov. 18, 2003 in Springfield, Mo.
Since winning their home opener on Nov. 6, the Skyhawks (1-2) are coming off a pair of tough road losses against teams who made the postseason in 2018.
On Friday at Southern Conference opponent Mercer, UT Martin traded blows throughout the contest before the host Bears knocked down six 3-pointers in a span of 6:39 down the stretch to take the 77-60 win. Quintin Dove enjoyed his best game as a Skyhawk with a team-best 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (13 points, seven rebounds, team-high five assists) and Jailen Gill (10 points, team-best nine rebounds) also cracked double-figures in the scoring column for UT Martin.
Western Illinois (2-2) is coming off a back-and-forth 68-66 overtime setback at Ohio Valley Conference member Eastern Illinois on Saturday night. In a game that featured 10 tie scores and nine lead changes, the Leathernecks led for over 28 minutes of clock time but went scoreless over the final 3:30 of the overtime period.
Kobe Webster poured in a game-high 18 points against Eastern Illinois while CJ Duff (16 points) and Isaac Johnson (13 points, 11 rebounds) also generated big scoring nights. Narrowly missing a triple-double was Brandon Gilbeck, who accumulated a line of nine points, 19 rebounds and nine blocks. Gilbeck - the 2017-18 Summit League Defensive Player of the Year - currently ranks first in the country with 5.3 blocks per game during his senior campaign.
