The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will look to close out the 2018 season on a high note with a contest against Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee State on Saturday, Nov. 17. Kickoff from Hale Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
Saturday's game marks the final of three games in the coveted Sergeant York Trophy series which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four OVC football-playing schools located in the state of Tennessee – Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin. UT Martin has won or shared the Sgt. York Trophy five times in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The Skyhawks have already clinched at least a share of the trophy but needs a win over TSU to clinch the trophy outright. UT Martin holds a 25-10 all-time record in the series – the best mark of the four Tennessee OVC schools. That includes a 16-4 mark since 2012.
The Skyhawks (2-8, 2-5 OVC) snapped their five-game losing streak against Tennessee Tech, sending out the team's 20 graduating senior on a high note. UT Martin scored early and often in the contest, tallying 21 unanswered points to open the game while holding the visiting Golden Eagles scoreless in the second half. The Skyhawks outgained Tech with 463 yards of total offense while limiting the Golden Eagle offense to just 214 yards of their own.
UT Martin has two players looking to maximize on their standout campaigns. Senior linebacker James Gilleylen currently ranks 10th on the program's all-time total tackles list with 286 and needs just two more tackles to move into sole possession of ninth. Meanwhile junior Terry Williams has tallied 63 receptions on the season which ranks eighth on the program's single-season top-10.
Tennessee State (3-5, 2-4 OVC) has seen its season take an uncharacteristic path, dropping five of its last six contests. The Tigers are led offensively by running back Te'Kendrick Robertson with 82 carries for 492 yards while Michael Hughes has completed 122-of 196 pass attempts for 1,405 yards and seven touchdowns. Meanwhile, receiver Chris Rowland ranks amongst the league leaders with 54 receptions for 711 yards and five touchdowns. The squad is paced defensively by Dajour Nesbeth with 50 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions.
Saturday marks the 28th meeting between UT Martin and Tennessee Tech in a series dating back to 1976. The Tigers holds a 16-11 series advantage but the Skyhawks have eight of the last 12 matchups.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Joe Holloway (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis.
