MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer program is set to host Eastern Kentucky in the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championship. First touch is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. while Murray State and Eastern Illinois are slated to play prior to the evening matchup at 4 p.m.
UT Martin has claimed the No. 1 seed in the OVC Soccer Championship as the Skyhawks boasted a 14-2-1 overall record and an 9-0-1 conference slate. The 2018 squad has already etched its place in the program's record book as the winningest team in school history. This year's team has recorded the most regular season victories (14) that also matched the 2011 season when the Skyhawks notched 14 total victories (postseason included).
UT Martin has received national praise from the United Soccer Coaches Poll, who ranked the Skyhawks at No. 9 in their latest edition of the South Region poll and has also been ranked No. 65 in NCAA Division-I soccer based on the squad's RPI. UT Martin has broken into the top-10 in several offensive categories among all Division-I programs as well.
Senior midfielder Amy McGivern leads the Skyhawks as she has produced an OVC-best 13 goals and league-leading 27 points. Skylor Keane (seven goals and four assists) and Danae Kaldaridou (six goals and three assists) have also given UT Martin alternate scoring options. A total of 12 Skyhawks have netted a goal on the year while a dozen UT Martin players have also tallied at least one assist.
The midfielder and defender corps has been outstanding this season as they have allowed a miniscule 0.76 goals per match and just 7.1 shots per contest. Leading the defensive side of the ball is Kaldaridou, Kamryn Chappell, Jacalyn Schubring, Sara Ketis and Kaci Mitchell as the five players pace the club in minutes played.
Goalkeeping has also been superb this season as the group between the posts have tallied a 0.75 goals against average. Leading the way is Erica Myers' over 1,129 minutes played, 0.64 GAA, 29 saves and nine victories.
"First of all we are delighted to be hosting the OVC Championship as the No. 1 seed," head coach Phil McNamara said."Early in the year we met with the players and specifically indicated the importance and benefits of winning the honor to host our conference Championship. I believe we have the best atmosphere for soccer in the league and want to thank and encourage our fans to come out in full force this weekend. I also want to thank our athletics administration staff for the work and effort to make this event a first class experience for all participating teams. With regard to our players, they are excited, refreshed and eager to take the field Friday following this past weekend off from competition. I like their mentality right now, including a quiet confidence in each other along with an understanding and respect factor for the work ethic required to win games at the NCAA Division-I level. The players have been simply phenomenal to this point and we hope they are ready for the next challenge of the OVC Tournament. Eastern Kentucky has been one of the top teams in the league this past few seasons and will prove a difficult and quality opponent. No question, we will need to be at our best Friday to reach the Final Sunday. I expect three top level games this weekend including all top four seeds competing from the OVC regular season. We hope our campus and the Martin community will embrace this event and help support our Skyhawks to a Championship this weekend."
Eastern Kentucky is coming off of a shootout victory over SIUE on Sunday and is led by Erin Torrence (nine goals and four assists) and Sara Owusu (five goals and two assists). The trio of Idalys Rea, Bailly Bounds and Kylie Thompson have all notched three goals apiece.
Goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre has logged nearly 1,700 minutes between the posts while sporting a 1.28 GAA. She has tallied a total of 79 saves while claiming four victories under third-year head coach Nick Flohre.
