The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will hit the road for an Ohio Valley Conference contest at No. 10 ranked Jacksonville State on Saturday, Nov. 3. Kickoff from Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (1-7, 1-4 OVC) enter the contest looking to snap a lengthy four-game losing streak. In their most recent contest, UT Martin gave up 16 early points to Southeast Missouri who later put the game away with a lead as large as 30 points midway through the fourth quarter before ultimately falling 56-33.
UT Martin saw junior quarterback Joe Hudson make his first career start against Southeast Missouri. Against the Redhawks, Hudson completed 18-of-36 pass attempts for 296 yards and a pair of passing touchdowns while notching 12 carries for 35 yards and a rushing touchdown. Turnovers would plague the lefty however as he tossed three interceptions. Posting another strong game of his own was junior wide receiver Jaylon Moore who tallied four receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown.
The game will feature two of the league's most successful coaches in UT Martin's Jason Simpson and Jacksonville State's John Grass. Simpson ranks seventh in OVC history with a 79-66 overall mark in 13 seasons – sitting as the longest tenured coach in the conference. Meanwhile, Grass has posted a 49-10 mark in his fifth season, posting a .831 winning percentage which ranks as the second-highest among all active FCS coaches.
No. 10 Jacksonville State (6-2, 5-1 OVC) is coming off a 42-15 win over then league leader Murray State a week ago. The Gamecocks tallied 577 yards of total offense behind the play of Clemson transfer quarterback Zerrick Cooper who tallied four touchdowns (three passing and one rushing) to earn OVC Newcomer of the Week honors. JSU currently ranks second in the FCS in total offense, gaining 539.3 yards per game while also ranking third in total defense, allowing just 252.6 ypg. JSU is the only team in nation to sit in the top five in both total offense and total defense.
Saturday's matchup marks the 40th meeting between the two programs with Jacksonville State holding a 32-7 series advantage. Additionally, the Skyhawks are just 3-16 in games played in Jacksonville with the team's last road victory coming on Oct. 31, 1987.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+ with Mickey Shadrix and Butch Barker on the call. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis. WUTM, UT Martin's award-winning student radio station, will also broadcast the game on 90.3 FM.
