JUMAMUKHAMBETOVA ROLLS TO SINGLES FLIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP AT ROBERTA ALISON FALL CLASSIC

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Senior Asel Jumamukhambetova set the tone for another successful outing for the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team, as the Skyhawks were one of 21 teams to compete at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic over the weekend.

Overall, UT Martin combined for 12 victories (seven singles, five doubles) against a tough field that included Air Force, host Alabama, Clemson, DePaul, East Carolina, Indiana, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Lewis University, Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, South Florida, Troy, Tulane, UAB, Western Michigan and Wisconsin.

Jumamukhambetova led the eight UT Martin representatives who took part in the prestigious tournament with four overall wins, including a perfect 3-0 mark in singles. She defeated Samford's Ariana Beltrame (6-3, 6-2), Indiana's Somer Henry (6-3, 6-2) and South Alabama's Nikola Kohoutova (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) on her way to the Titia Wilmink Singles Draw flight championship.

The Skyhawk trio of Andrea Plantada, Mizuki Sakurai and Amelia Campbell each advanced to the winner's bracket consolation finals in their respective brackets. Plantada came away with a victory in the Shelley Godwin Singles Draw, defeating Air Force's Meredith Laskey by a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) score in the opening round. Sakurai also posted a first-round win in the Pat Morgan Singles Draw, besting Tulane's Alex Alegre by a 1-6, 7-6 (6), 10-8 margin. In the opening round matchup of the Stefanie Leung Singles Draw, Campbell defeated Lewis University's Joie Reisch by a 6-3, 6-3 margin.

Jule Streif posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Lewis University's Sophie Davis in the Monica Kervandjian Round Robin bracket. Jemima Potter (Lori Smith Singles Draw) also represented UT Martin in singles action.

The UT Martin duos of Campbell/Plantada and Olha Burak/Streif each posted a pair of doubles victories. Campbell and Plantada advanced to the championship round of the Mindy Leach Doubles Draw, defeating DePaul's Keisha Clousing/Milica Tesic (6-4) and Western Michigan's Denise Azcui/Kristina Tiraspolsky (7-6 (5)) along the way. Meanwhile, Burak and Streif teamed up for a 6-3 triumph over Lewis University's Aleksandra Sredojevic/Reisch in the opening round and a 6-2 victory against Kennesaw State's Aspen Jarrett/Kendall Nash in the winner's bracket consolation finals of the Nancy Pate Doubles Draw.

Jumamukhambetova/Potter also earned a 6-3 win over the DePaul tandem of Marija Jovicic/Aspasia Avgeri in the Jill Breslin Doubles Draw. Daphne Pratt and Sakurai also took part in the Mari Muller Doubles Draw before Pratt was forced to withdraw.

The Skyhawks wrap up their fall schedule next weekend when they travel across the state for the Chattanooga Fall Invite on Nov. 2-3.
