
UT MARTIN TENNIS BEGINS ACTIVE WEEK WITH 5-2 VICTORY OVER ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad began its four-day trek through the Yellowhammer State on a high note today, defeating Alabama-Huntsville by a 5-2 margin in its first non-tournament competition of the fall.

All six Skyhawks who saw action today earned at least one victory as UT Martin swept the doubles point and won four of the six singles matchups.

In doubles, Andrea Plantada and Andrea Campbell got things started with a 6-2 victory over Stefanie Mehlich and Monika Polakovic at No. 2. The Skyhawks officially clinched the opening point after a 7-5 victory by Jemima Potter and Asel Jumamukhambetova against Sarah Stearman and Presley Thomas at No. 1. UT Martin put the finishing touches on the doubles sweep after Mizuki Sakurai and Daphne Pratt worked up a 6-4 victory at No. 3 over Karolin Kirchtag and Mariana Lopez.

The host Chargers claimed the win at No. 1 singles to begin the second half of the match but the Skyhawks bounced back with a pair of victories. Plantada dispatched Kirchtag by a 6-3, 6-2 margin at No. 3 before Campbell outlasted Rinate Bauzhanova at No. 6 with a gutsy 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win.

After Alabama-Huntsville tallied a point via a No. 2 singles win, it was Sakurai who clinched the match with for UT Martin with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 4 over Polakovic. Pratt tacked on another win after taking down Marliene van Beek with a strong 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph at No. 5.

The Skyhawks return to action with another head-to-head dual matchup tomorrow against Alabama A&M in Huntsville. UT Martin will then make the 150-mile drive to Tuscaloosa to take part in the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama on Oct. 26-27.
