The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will look to snap a three-game losing streak when playing host to Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Oct. 27. The game serves as the annual Homecoming matchup for the program with kickoff from Hardy M. Graham Stadium scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Saturday's contest will serve as the program's 66th annual Homecoming game with UT Martin holding a 36-29 overall mark in said matchups. This will mark just third time the Skyhawks and Redhawks have ever squared off on Homecoming with the previous meetings occurring during the 1995 and 2002 seasons. The Skyhawk are 8-4 in Homecoming games under the direction of head coach Jason Simpson.
The Skyhawks (1-6, 1-3 OVC) are hoping that the Homecoming festivities will help in assisting the squad as it looks to snap a lengthy three game losing streak. In the team's three consecutive losses, each game has been determined by single digits while the margins have combined to total just 11 points. UT Martin fell to Murray State (45-37) before dropping by even smaller margins against Eastern Kentucky (35-34) and Eastern Illinois (24-21 in overtime), with the latter marking the first overtime defeat since the 2012 season.
The game will feature two of the league's veteran coaches in UT Martin's Jason Simpson and Southeast Missouri's Tom Matukewicz. Simpson ranks seventh in OVC history with a 79-65 overall mark in 13 seasons – sitting as the longest tenured coach in the conference. Meanwhile, Matukewicz has posted a 21-32 mark in his fifth season at the helm of the Redhawks.
Southeast Missouri (5-2, 3-1 OVC) enters the contest on an upward trajectory after snapping No. 4 ranked Jacksonville State's 36-game conference winning streak with a 37-14 upset. Defensively, the Redhawks forced a season-high five turnovers – including three interceptions, a pair of fumble recoveries, a safety and a blocked field goal which was returned 85 yards for a touchdown to break the game open.
The Redhawks are led by Northern Illinois transfer quarterback Daniel Santacaterina who has been named OVC Newcomer of the Week twice this season while completing 116-of-192 passes for 1,539 yards and 16 touchdowns. The squad also boasts Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Marquis Terry who has tallied 109 carries for 791 yards and eight touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Zach Hall has tallied 92 tackles while notching 7.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
Saturday's game serves as the 34th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a narrow 17-14 advantage. The Skyhawks have won six of the last seven meetings with Southeast Missouri's lone victory coming as the road team on Sept. 20, 2014. Dating back to 2008, each contest has been decided by 10 points or fewer – minus 2016 – including last season's matchup which saw the Skyhawks boot a field goal with one second remaining to notch a 16-14 victory.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color), John Hatler (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis. WUTM, UT Martin's award-winning student radio station, will also broadcast the game on 90.3 FM.
