MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team saw a pair of seniors net a goal each in today's 2-1 Senior Day victory over Morehead State.
UT Martin (14-2-1, 9-0-1 OVC) provided enormous pressure as the Skyhawks outshot Morehead State by a 24-7 margin while also maintaining its lock-down defense on the other side of the ball. This season's 14 victories marks the most wins in the regular season and ties the most in a season (postseason included) when the Skyhawks went 14-7-2 in 2011. UT Martin closes out the season a perfect 9-0-0 at Skyhawk Field for the first time in program history.
The Skyhawks were led by the senior duo of Danae Kladaridou and Amy McGivern as both found the back of the net. McGivern led the squad in total shots as she reeled off nine while five were on goal. Nicole Collins recorded a friendly pass that counted as an assist in the match. Kaldaridou and Alice Adams put up four shots apiece while Katelyn Colvin, Sara Ketis, Kaci Mitchell, Kamryn Chappell, Bella Roberts, Samantha Kelly and Collins all tallied one shot each.
Looking to end the regular season strong, a total of nine Skyhawks played 70 minutes or more and seven players tallied the complete 90 minutes on the pitch.
Senior goalkeeper Makenzie Crawford logged a complete match between the posts as she allowed just one goal – a tough ball that was just over her head. She was able to make a pair of saves in her fifth victory of the season.
Morehead State struck first as Makenna Lavatori scored in the ninth minute. From about 40 yards out, she sent a free kick into the box that was barely out of the reach of a leaping Crawford. The Eagles would go into the halftime intermission leading 1-0.
UT Martin answered at the 55:26 mark as Collins reeled off a pass from the front right corner to connect with McGivern for the equalizing goal. The Skyhawks would pull ahead in the 65th minute as Kaldaridou found a deflection at the goal line for a goal at point blank range.
"This was a difficult game," head coach Phil McNamara said. "We knew that today was going to be interesting after the emotion of Friday. The girls have been absolutely fantastic up to this point. Morehead State put up a great fight today as they are fighting and scrapping to get a good seeding in the tournament. We won a goal down just like on Friday. That is a bit concerning but the girls have shown great poise to come back. We had the stats in our favor in terms of the shots but we finally got the two big goals from two seniors to swing things our way. I am delighted with the performance from all of our seniors with how they handled things to win on Senior Day. Going forward, we are going to rest this week and prepare for the OVC tournament."
UT Martin has clinched the 2018 OVC Regular Season Championship and has earned the No. 1 seed in the 2018 OVC Soccer Championships. The Skyhawks will receive a double-bye and will host the semifinals and championship match on Friday, Nov. 2 and Sunday, Nov. 4, respectively. First touch from Skyhawk Field on Friday, Nov. 2 will be at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN3.
