MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer squad is set to host its final two regular season matches, both at the friendly confines of Skyhawk Field. UT Martin will first host Ohio Valley Conference opponents Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. and Morehead State on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the match against Morehead State.
UT Martin (12-2-1, 7-0-1 OVC) looks to close out the regular season with a bang as the Skyhawks have made 2018 a season to remember. The Skyhawks currently rank 75th in the nation based on the squad's RPI which is the highest in program history. The team has cracked into the top-5 in the nation in total goals (fourth), shots on goal per match (fourth) and scoring offense (fifth). The squad has run roughshod over the OVC on the pitch as the Skyhawks lead the league in shots (298), points (105), goals (40), assists (25), least goals allowed (11) and goals against average (0.72).
Leading the way is Amy McGivern – who is coming off of back-to-back OVC Offensive Player of the Week awards and a Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women's Soccer Player of the Week nod. The Drumaness, Northern Ireland native ranks 16th in the nation in total goals (11) which also leads the OVC. The duo of Danae Kaldaridou and Skylor Keane have also been key contributors this year as both have netted five goals each and tallied three assists apiece.
The UT Martin defense has been outstanding this season as the midfielder and defender corps has thwarted opposing offenses by limiting them to just 7.2 shots per contest and a mere 0.73 goals per match. Key players on the back line have been Kamryn Chappell, Jacalyn Schubring and Kaci Mitchell while midfielders Kaldaridou and Sara Ketis have also been major benefactors – all of the aforementioned players rank in the top-5 on the squad in minutes played.
In goal, Erica Myers has been one of the toughest keepers in the OVC to score on this season as she has posted a minute goals against average of 0.61 while racking up 28 saves. She has logged over 1,039 minutes between the posts and is coming off of a pair of clean sheets. Her six shutouts on the year rank second in the league as she is just one behind Sara Teteak of Eastern Illinois.
Eastern Kentucky is led by the well-rounded play of Erin Torrence (seven goals and four assists). Both Sarah Owusu (five goals and two assists) and Idalys Rea (three goals and four assists) have also given the Colonels excellent play on the pitch.
Goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre has played the bulk of the time between the posts for Eastern Kentucky as she has clocked in for over 1,396 minutes while sporting a respectable 1.35 goals against average. She has accumulated 55 saves on the year under third-year head coach Nick Flohre.
Morehead State is led by Dani Wilson (seven goals and one assist) – whom McGivern shared her OVC Offensive Player of the Week honor with last week. The Eagles have shown to be able to spread the ball around as seven players have tallied assists on the year. Makenna Lavatori is coming off of an OVC Defensive Player of the week accolade.
Eva Helgadottir and Michelle Washburn have both seen valuable minutes at the goalkeeper slot for Morehead State. Helgadottir has logged over 1,018 minutes, posted a 1.77 goals against average and recorded 70 saves on the season while Washburn is coming off of a weekend in which she allowed just one goal between a pair of matches under 10th-year head coach Warren Lipka.
