SKYHAWK TENNIS CONTINUES STRONG FALL SEASON AT ITA OHIO VALLEY REGIONALS

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Four University of Tennessee at Martin tennis players combined for a dozen victories against stiff competition at the five-day ITA Ohio Valley Regionals held at the Champions Club.

The Skyhawks were one of 22 teams competing in the tournament, joining the likes of Austin Peay, Ball State, Belmont, Butler, Chattanooga, Cincinnati, ETSU, Indiana, IUPUI, Kentucky, Lipscomb, Louisville, Memphis, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, Northern Kentucky, Purdue, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Wright State and Xavier.

UT Martin was represented by the senior trio of Asel Jumamukhambetova, Andrea Plantada and Jemima Potter, alongside sophomore Amelia Campbell. Those four combined for six singles victories and six doubles wins, bringing their fall season total up to 50 overall wins. Through three tournaments, the Skyhawks have gone 34-19 in singles (.642 winning percentage) and 16-7 in doubles action (.696).

The doubles team of Plantada and Campbell made the deepest run in the tournament bracket, advancing all the way to the Flight B doubles semifinals. Their path began with an 8-2 win over Wright State's Andreea Craciun and Jillian Milano before defeating IUPUI's Samantha Hayward and Mariella Pessina by an 8-1 margin. In the final four match, the UT Martin duo fell by an 8-4 margin to a mixed team featuring one player from Tennessee and one player from Vanderbilt.

Jumamukhambetova and Potter took part in the Division I doubles flight, falling to a team from Memphis before recovering for an impressive 8-6 victory over Chattanooga's tandem of Bogdana Zaporozhets and Delaney Edwards.

Plantada and Jumamukhambetova each tallied a 2-1 record in singles. Competing in the Flight B field, Plantada downed Janelle Ghanem from Miami (Ohio) by a 6-2, 6-3 margin and also turned away IUPUI's Meghan Bernard by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Jumamukhambetova dialed up a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 win over Maria Koo from Northern Kentucky and a 7-6, 6-2 triumph over Xavier's Anna Letto in the Division I bracket.

The Skyhawks also received impressive singles wins out of Potter (Division I flight) and Campbell (Flight B). Potter was responsible for a 6-2, 6-2 win against Sarah Lounsbury from IUPUI while Campbell notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Wright State's Anna Marie Reynolds.

UT Martin will take next week off from official competition before swinging through the Yellowhammer State for a four-day stretch. The Skyhawks take on Alabama-Huntsville on Oct. 24 and Alabama A&M on Oct. 25 before taking part in a tournament hosted by Alabama on Oct. 26-27.
