Scott Carpenter, son of longtime head coach and current volunteer assistant Jerry Carpenter, is in his 22nd season on the Skyhawk golf staff as a volunteer assistant in 2025-26.
Carpenter was a member of the Skyhawk golf team for four years, participating in more than 70 competitive rounds from 2000-04. His career-best seventh-place finish came during his junior season while he also fired a career low 1-under-par 71 at the Morton B. Harris Intercollegiate.
As a junior golfer, Carpenter was an accomplished player, finishing 17th in the 1998 Tennessee State Golf Tournament.
Carpenter now works with players on the range and helps coach the team in two tournaments each year. He was an influential member of UT Martin's first-ever Ohio Valley Conference championship in 2016 and also helped tutor the Skyhawk golfers in the ensuing NCAA Regional held in Franklin, Tenn. He has also been a member of the coaching staff during UT Martin's 2021 and 2022 OVC championship runs as the school advanced to the NCAA Regional in Noblesville, Ind. (2021) and in Norman, Okla. (2022).
Carpenter also provided guidance for Skyhawk senior Hunter Richardson, who became just the seventh golfer in OVC history to win back-to-back medalist honors in 2016-17. He helped Richardson become just the sixth player in OVC history to earn all-conference accolades in all four years while he also won the OVC Player of the Year award on two different occasions (2017, 2018). Richardson made his PGA Tour debut in July 2019 at the Barbasol Championship, held in Lexington, Ky., becoming the first-ever UT Martin golfer to play in a PGA Tour event.
Carpenter graduated from UT Martin in 2004 with a degree in business management and is currently employed with BSN Sports in Martin, Tenn., a local retailer of athletic equipment and sporting goods.
Carpenter is married to the former Stephanie Hall, who is a second grade teacher at nearby Union City Elementary. The couple has two children.
