Phillips Ranks Fifth To Guide UT Martin After Day 1 Of Loyola Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad put on a good showing in its first 18 holes of the spring season today as the Skyhawks opened the Loyola Intercollegiate with an under-par performance.
UT Martin shot a 284 (-4) today to rank sixth in a stacked field of 20 teams at the Palm Valley Golf Club. The Skyhawks ranked only behind tournament host Loyola (Md.)'s 280 (-8), Richmond's 280 (-8), South Dakota's 281 (-7), Denver's 281 (-7) and NC State's 282 (-6) on the team leaderboard.
UT Martin found success today on the par-4's, leading the field with a 3.98 (-1) par-4 scoring average. Overall, the five-man Skyhawk scoring lineup posted 19 birdies while individual Jaden Morrell added four birdies and an eagle.
Grant Phillips led the way for UT Martin today with a team-high six birdies on the way to a 68 (-4). That score ranks fifth on the player leaderboard, three strokes behind Utah Valley's Paxton Maxwell for the lead. Four of Phillips' birdies came on the back-nine as he only had two bogeys in Round 1. Overall, Phillips ranks third in the tournament in birdies (six) and sixth in par-3 scoring (3.00, E) while also tallying a team-best 4.25 (-3) par-5 scoring average.
Luke Caldwell ranks 24th in the field of 119 golfers with a 71 (-1) through 18 holes. His scorecard included two birdies, a tournament-high 15 pars and just one bogey. His 3.80 (-2) par-4 scoring average ranks fourth in the field while he tied Phillips for the sixth-best par-3 scoring average (3.00, E) on the first day of the 54-hole event.
Drew Williams rolled in four birdies on the way to an even-par 72 today while John-Gregory Wilson's 73 (+1) included three birdies and was the final Skyhawk countable score.
Freshman Bryce Harmon posted three of his four birdies over his final eight holes, finishing with a 75 (+3) in his first career appearance in UT Martin's scoring lineup.
Morrell's front-nine included three birdies and an eagle, the latter of which took place on the par-5, 515-yard Hole No. 2. He finished with an even-par 72 for the sixth-best tally of the tournament's 19 individuals and his second-best score so far during the 2025-26 season.
The Skyhawks will be paired with NC State, Seton Hall and South Dakota State for Round 2 tomorrow, which will begin at 8:45 a.m. CT. UT Martin's scoring lineup will start on Holes No. 5-7 while Morrell will open his day on Hole No. 4.
